Fuel Up to Play 60

Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program that provides our schools an opportunity to receive funding to support health and wellness initiatives. Their goal is to end childhood obesity within a generation! It is sponsored by the National Dairy council and the NFL. This program inspires students and families to improve healthy eating and physical activity. Several of our schools have applied and will be receiving grant funding to kick off the program in their buildings. Heather Doyle, school psychologist, submitted the grant proposal for Garfield Elementary requesting $700 in funding and received the entire amount requested. Garfield intends to use the Fuel Up to Play 60 grant funding to sponsor events such as healthy cooking classes for families, a Pep Rally and kickball event to introduce the program to families and students, pedometers for the walking club and physical education, and providing a healthy snack to students. Fuel Up to Play 60 is an ongoing program that will continue next school year. Garfield will be applying for more funding for 2011-2012. Please log on and support Garfield. All Medina city schools are enrolled in the program and need your support. Students and parents can sign on to win additional prizes and monetary rewards for your school!

Well-Rounded Education Founded In The Basics

Teachers are striving for their students' success at grade-level competency skills and stage achievement tests. Intervention tutoring and a volunteer community-based tutoring program help students who need an extra boost.

Because lessons are more meaningful when subject areas are connected in hands-on activities, Mayflower Day, a Civil War re-enactment, Pioneer Day and States Day are annual events tying in many aspects of the curriculum.

The works of "Artists of the Week" are displayed in the school's entrance hall. An art gallery of student and professional art work graces the main hallway.

An arts day brings guest authors, actors and artists to demonstrate their talents and inspire students. Science assemblies stress the fun of discovery through hands-on experiments.

Serving A Diverse Enrollment

The diversity of Garfield School's enrollment is an "educational plus". Garfield offers a variety of programs to meet needs.

A consulting teacher works with classroom teachers to enrich the curriculum and challenge academic high achievers.

Special education intervention staff assure that students with disabilities are included in the regular classroom.

A guidance counselor works with the staff, parents and students in a variety of ways.

Garfield staff are involved with continuous improvement that emphasizes data collection, parental involvement, remediation of students and-risk of not succeeding academically, and improved performance on proficiency and achievement tests. Garfield is fortunate to house of of the district's Extended Day Kindergarten programs for students that qualify for that intervention.
